Video Series: Helping Students Make Informed Judgments

Why teach students how to make more informed judgments? The short answer: more informed judgments lead to better decisions and more effective and efficient use of resources.

Moreover, raising students’ awareness about accounting judgments in introductory courses and helping them make more informed judgments is essential to elevating the public image of accounting to the point where leading accounting practitioners and academics become more influential in the media and public policy.

There are three other reasons students need to learn how to make more informed judgments: First, to identify bad advice and uninformed arguments. With the advent of blogs, Wikipedia, free on-line courses, and other platforms, virtually anyone can express opinions. Good advice and arguments often get buried in seas of gibberish. Second, to evaluate competing arguments, which is especially challenging when the arguments are sophisticated. Third, to make more informed judgments when preparing, auditing, or using reported numbers.

The following resources center on measurement, one of two areas where accounting judgments can be particularly challenging. The other area is choosing between acceptable alternative treatments in situations where objective experts disagree on the best treatment and the financial statement consequences of the alternatives differ considerably and are significant. This is a topic for another day.
